Personalization Made Easy: Using Merge Tags to Connect with Visitors
Do you have a favorite store? Or a coffee shop, bakery, pet store, etc? The place you go to often enough to know the people who work there, and for the staff to remember your name and preferences. What makes you go there all the time?
Sure, it may be the location, prices, the products they offer. But chances are, you keep going back because the staff took the time to get to know you. This personalized touch doesn’t just create a nice experience—it builds connections that make your customers feel valuable. Now, imagine bringing that level of personalization to your website.
With our new merge tag component, that’s exactly what you can do 😉
Why Personalized Messages Matter
The advertising space is crowded. Estimates suggest that the average person encounters between 4,000 and 10,000 advertisements daily. This figure encompasses various forms of advertising, including digital ads, banners, billboards, TV commercials, and more. It’s easy for messages to get lost in the noise.
Those figures are overwhelming, to say the least. As a result, humans consciously notice only a fraction of these messages. You’re probably familiar with the "ad blindness" phenomenon which leads people to filter out most ads, paying attention to fewer than 100 each day.
This leads us to the new component.
What Are Merge Tags?
Merge tags also known as personalization fields are commonly used in email marketing to personalize content by inserting subscriber-specific information. They allow marketers to pull specific information from their mailing lists into their email templates. For example, a merge tag like *|FNAME|* can be used to insert a recipient's first name into the message, making the communication feel more personal and engaging.
Hearing or reading one’s name has been shown to activate the brain differently compared to other words. Studies using brain imaging technology have found that hearing one’s name lights up certain areas of the brain associated with self-identity and social behavior. This deep-seated response makes personalized marketing more effective, as it creates a sense of importance and connection.
When it comes to popups, merge tags work following the same principle.
How Merge Tags Work in Popups
Merge tags act as placeholders that are replaced with actual user data when the popup is displayed. This allows for the insertion of personalized information such as the user's name, location, or other relevant details directly into the popup content.
Merge tags in Claspo are meant to help you customize the different states of popups. Since these tags work with input data, you can place them starting with the second page in the editor, and where the states are.
There are three states: success, error, and existing. You can add the following merge tags to any and each of them:
- Email;
- Phone;
- First name;
- Last name;
- Text input.
You can use them in any webpage widget that includes matching components. You can also add merge tags to gamified widgets to autofill the name of the prize and value in the “success” message.
