What it solves & why businesses use it

Gamified popups capitalize on curiosity and excitement by creating a sense of instant reward or achievement, which can turn a hesitant visitor into a subscriber. They solve the issue of low engagement and unwillingness to share contact details by offering users incentives (like discounts, exclusive gifts, or bonuses) in exchange for their email.

Key benefits include:

  • Attracting first-time visitors: Grab attention by offering an interactive reward that motivates users to take action.

  • Collecting high-quality emails: Capture emails from actively engaged visitors, ensuring better lead quality.

  • Increasing conversion rates: Drive action by offering instant rewards or incentives (like discounts or exclusive offers) in exchange for user participation, making it easier to convert interest into real results.

When & how to use it

Gamified popups work best when they’re used to engage visitors at key moments during their browsing experience:

  • On first visit: When you greet a visitor and want them to leave their email and/or make their first purchase.

  • Exit-intent: When you want to hold a visitor at the exit and capture their email by offering a discount on their next purchase.

  • Seasonal promotions: When promoting seasonal discounts or special offers to draw attention and increase instant sales during limited-time events.

How it looks

Gamified popups usually include the following elements:

  • Game element: This could be a spin-the-wheel, scratch-off card, quiz, or pick-a-gift.

  • Incentive offer: A clear reward (e.g., discount, free shipping, or exclusive content) is offered in exchange for an email sign-up.

  • Email field: A field where the user can enter their email to unlock the prize, followed by a submit button.

  • Countdown timer (optional): A countdown timer or limited-time offer to create a sense of urgency.

  • Clear call-to-action: Strong and clear CTAs to prompt users to take action.

How to set it up

Let’s walk through setting up your spin-the-wheel widget.

Step 1: Choose a template

Start by picking a gamification widget from our extensive library. Whether you want a flashy, festive design or a sleek, minimalistic look, there’s a template that fits your needs.

Step 2: Customize it

Our drag-and-drop editor lets you tweak every element to fit your style. Here’s what you can do:

  • Adjust the colors, fonts, and buttons to match your branding.

  • Add or remove components like timers, input fields, or extra text to refine the experience.

  • Modify the background — keep it solid, add an image, or even make it transparent.

  • Customize the CTA button with a unique shape, shadow, or standout effect.

  • Fine-tune the closing button and input fields for a seamless look.

To customize any element in the template, just click on it — its settings will appear in the right panel. Want to add something new? Pick a component from the left panel and drag it to where you want it on the template.

Don’t forget the subscription status windows — make sure they match the design.

Before you move on, switch to mobile editing mode to ensure everything looks great on smaller screens. If needed, hide elements like images or social media buttons (in case you’ve added them to a widget) to keep things clean and user-friendly.

Step 3: Set up your prize options & winning odds

Now for the reward pool part — deciding what users can win and how often they win it:

  • Enter your prize options on the wheel — discounts, free shipping, special gifts, etc.

  • Set the probability for each prize. Want that 20% discount to be rarer than the 5% one? You’re in control.

  • Assign unique promo codes to each reward so users can redeem them instantly.

To open the corresponding settings, click on the wheel on the widget, go to the General tab > Edit rewards.

Step 4: Configure the display rules

Let’s set up the following rules so the widget appears when users try to leave the site (exit intent). We’ll also add the Spent on the website trigger and set it to 20 seconds (though you can adjust the timing if you prefer). This way, we’ll target visitors who’ve spent some time browsing which is a clear sign of interest. That gives you a better chance of converting them into subscribers, or even customers.

Step 5: Integrate with your marketing tools

Connect your ESP, CRM, or CDP to automatically send collected data — like reward promo codes — straight to your user's inbox for follow-ups, segmentation, or personalized messages.

Gamified popups: a powerful tool for modern web design, engagement and conversion

In today’s highly competitive online environment, website owners, ecommerce platforms, and SaaS businesses need more than just clean design or fast loading pages — they need web experiences that actively engage users and drive action. This is where gamified popups shine.

Gamified popups are interactive, game-like elements seamlessly integrated into your website’s design to capture visitors’ attention and encourage them to take action — whether it’s subscribing to your mailing list, completing a purchase, or claiming a special offer. By embedding gamification elements directly into your site's user interface (UI), you transform passive browsing into an engaging and interactive journey. Visitors feel like they’re playing a game, not just interacting with a traditional marketing popup, which increases both engagement and conversion rates.

Why pop-up gamification works

Website gamification taps into the psychology of reward and competition. When users engage with elements like a spin to win wheel or scratch card pop-up, they experience a small dopamine boost that makes the interaction memorable and enjoyable.

In web design, these elements don’t just entertain — they strategically boost conversion rates. For example, offering a coupon code as a prize can quickly turn a casual visitor into a paying customer, especially in ecommerce stores. This kind of popup creates a win-win: the user gets value, and the site owner captures valuable leads or sales.

Benefits of gamified pop-ups for online businesses

Implementing pop up gamification offers several advantages:

  • Higher engagement: gamified popups use interactive elements to pull users into the experience. This interactivity naturally increases click-through rates, as users are curious to see what they might win.
  • Lead generation: by tying the chance to win a coupon, discount, or free trial to email submission, these popups make it fun to join your email list. Unlike traditional forms, gamified popups offer an immediate reward, making users more likely to share their contact info.
  • Conversion optimization: using gamification in marketing you give visitors a reason to take action on the spot. Whether it's a “spin to win wheel” moment or opening a gift box, the perceived value of a prize increases the likelihood of an immediate purchase or signup.
  • Marketing versatility:  with a wide range of gamified popup examples, you can easily launch popup campaigns tailored to different promotions, audience segments, or seasonal events.

How to choose the right prizes for your gamified popup

Creating a gamified popup is not just about adding flashy wheels or cool animations. The real magic happens when you fine-tune the rewards — that's what makes your gamification strategy both interactive and exciting and sustainable for your business.

In any spin-the-wheel widget, you want your visitors to win, but you also need to protect your margins. A well-balanced rewards pool combines both — enough frequent wins to keep users engaged, but not so many high-value prizes that it eats into your profit. Let’s break it down.

Gamified pop-up prize types to offer

Here are some popular gamification popup reward types that work for most online businesses:

  • Discounts: the most common prizes in gamification popups. 5%, 10%, or 15% off coupons are easy to redeem, deliver instant satisfaction, and gently nudge shoppers toward checkout.
  • Free products or samples: small freebies give users a stronger incentive to complete a purchase while helping you promote specific products.
  • Gift cards: let visitors win store credit or partner brand gift cards. They create an element of surprise and encourage future shopping.
  • Loyalty points: perfect for stores running a reward system. Bonus points give an extra reason to stick around and engage with your brand.
  • Big-ticket rewards: rare but memorable. Think $500 gift cards or free year-long subscriptions. These prizes are extremely attractive but should stay rare to protect your budget.

“I've tested gamified popups across 30+ eCommerce clients through Perfect Afternoon, and the biggest insight was that click-through mechanics outperformed lead capture games by 180%.

While most agencies push spin-wheels with immediate discounts, I found that "open up your surprise" buttons leading to separate reward pages generated 4.2% conversion rates versus 1.6% for traditional wheel popups. My standout campaign used a "pick-a-gift" mechanic for a manufacturing client where visitors chose between three mystery boxes, but each led to different product demonstration videos rather than discounts. This approach increased qualified leads by 290% because engaged visitors who watched the full demos were already pre-qualified buyers.

The critical mistake I see everywhere is treating gamified popups like regular lead magnets. Analytics showed me that users who engaged with interactive elements stayed 340% longer on product pages afterward. The game isn't the conversion tool—it's the engagement amplifier that primes visitors for your actual sales process. What actually moves the needle is designing the game around your customer's next logical step, not around what prize you're comfortable giving away.

I stopped offering percentage discounts in games entirely after finding that "free consultation" and "exclusive product preview" prizes drove 60% more revenue per conversion.

A simple tiered gamification strategy

The secret sauce behind great gamification popups is balancing excitement and sustainability:

  • Low-tier rewards (such as 10% off, free shipping, festive packaging) — should cover about 60-70% of spins (or pick a gift option). These keep engagement high because users can always win something.
  • Mid-tier rewards (like a free product or a $10 gift card) — limit to 15-20% odds of winning. These feel more special and trigger extra excitement.
  • High-tier rewards (such as a $500 gift card, VIP experience) — keep these at 5-10% odds. They act like mini jackpots that create buzz without breaking your budget.

This mix keeps your gamification elements fun, while your revenue stays healthy.

How to set up rewards for pop-up gamification in Claspo

With Claspo, setting up your, say, spin-the-wheel gamified popup is incredibly straightforward. Our popup editor lets you fully control which prizes you offer — and exactly how often users can reveal their prize. Look how flexible it is:

  • You assign each reward its own chance to win — for example, 5% off might have a 27% probability, while a rare 15% discount appears only 9% of the time.
  • Non-discount rewards like free shipping or festive wrapping can easily be added to diversify your gamification strategy.
  • For every prize, you can assign a unique promo code, so each winning spin automatically generates the correct reward for the user.
  • The “Equalize” option helps you balance your reward pool automatically if needed.

By using Claspo’s intuitive prize pool manager, you’re not leaving your gamification elements to chance. You can build fully controlled, engaging and interactive experiences where users can spin the wheel, feel the element of surprise, and stay excited to win something every time.
